Dr M quits GTA, focuses on 'Malay Proclamation'

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has left the Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) coalition he helped form last year.

Mahathir said the decision was made after GTA failed to show results during the last general election. It saw 168 GTA candidates - who stood either on the Pejuang or Putra ticket - all losing their deposits.

"GTA was not registered (because) GTA is not functioning and moving forward," he told reporters at the Pertubuhan Prihatin Kubang Pasu Aidilfitri Open House last night, according to Astro Awani.

The nonagenarian is focused on the ‘Malay People's Proclamation’ signature campaign which he said has attracted the support of Perikatan Nasional politicians such as PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and Kedah PAS chief Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.

Mahathir said the proclamation was an awareness campaign for the Malay masses to inform them that they had ostensibly "lost power".

In February, Mahathir withdrew from Pejuang - a party he formed in 2020, after being booted from Bersatu, another party he founded in 2016.

'Show me the money'

Meanwhile, Mahathir challenged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to prove that the former had RM1 billion in cash.

"If he does so, he can keep half of it," Mahathir said.

This was in reference to Anwar's speech on March 16 that a person who was "in power for 22 years and 22 months" had amassed billions and stashed it abroad.

Mahathir assumed this was in reference to him and sued Anwar for RM150 million in defamation costs.

Also at the open house event was Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir who told reporters his party will not be allied with any pact that includes Umno because the latter was linked to kleptocracy.

He said a decision over a possible alliance for Pejuang has yet to be made. Pejuang has two seats in the Kedah legislative assembly, one occupied by Mukhriz.
