DAP MP calls for probe against Hadi over 'topple govt' plot remark

PARLIAMENT | A DAP lawmaker today called for a probe against PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang over the latter's alleged admission of a plot to topple the government.

RSN Rayer (Harapan-Jelutong) in his Budget 2023 debate called on Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to investigate Hadi's reported remarks that he argued were a penal code offence under activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

Having gone through a series of political turmoil that led to the last general election, Rayer said the present government was formed in line with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's decree for political stability.

"But the other day Marang (Hadi) said the other side (opposition) is plotting to topple the government.

"I urge the home minister to investigate because this goes against Section 124(B) of the Penal Code," said the DAP lawmaker.

Rayer (above) also pointed out that multiple police reports would have been lodged against the DAP if the party had made such remarks while part of the opposition bench.

Defending Hadi, Mohd Misbahul Munir Masduki (PN-Parit Buntar) cited a standing order against Rayer that no member shall impute improper motives to any other member.

"You said 'Marang is plotting'... this is imputing an improper motive. Marang is only making a political statement by looking at recent developments, he did not plot (anything)," said Misbahul Munir.

A brief shouting match erupted after Rayer quoted Hadi's reported remarks that it is normal for there to be a change of government, and the opposition has the "right to plan" to bring down the government.

The MPs' microphones were subsequently switched off but a voice was heard demanding evidence that Abdul Hadi had plotted to bring down the government.

Misbahul Munir also accused the media of "spinning" Hadi's statement made in Parliament yesterday.

Deputy speaker Alice Lau, who presided over the sitting, called for calm and ruled for Fathul Huzir Ayob (PN-Gerik) to proceed as the next debater.

Previously, Hadi shared his prediction during a dialogue organised by book publisher Yayasan Permata Ummah in Kuala Lumpur but was short on details.

He did not specify whether the cause of the collapse would come from within or without the government.
