I refer to the malaysiakini report PM: New ACA chief to be announced soon. While the former ACA chief has gone off under a cloud of corruption allegations, it is hoped that the government has learned from its mistake and will now appoint a new chief who is as clean as a whistle and who will work without fear or favour.

Foreign investors will be wary of investing in this country if corruption and abuse of power is not curb effectively. The new head of the ACA should be proactive in fighting both in the public and private sectors, and there should be no political interference in his job.

'Big fishes' should also be hauled up for their misdeeds and not only the small fry as is often the case now.

The person selected to be the new ACA chief should be trained in law and if we can find a candidate like the legendary Harun Hashim, the first ACA chief who struck fear among the corrupt, then half the battle is won.

Mind you, nowadays the face of corruption is not like before and it comes disguised in may facets such as kickback commissions, sexual favours and money politics to win votes. Everybody should play a part in combating this disease which has caused nation to be in despair. Unemployment will increase if foreign investors skip our shores to invest in other countries that are less corrupt.

Billions have been lost in the past when public funds ended up in somebody's pockets through dubious means.

Top officials who misuse their power need to be held accountable for their misdeeds and having a good ACA chief who is willing to brave the storms to bring these big culprits to book is the first step towards making our country corrupt-free.

Let us hope that the next ACA chief has the strength and character to be his own man and will not bow to political pressure when pursuing big cases where top guns are involved. Failing which the consequences are there for all to see - Third World countries which have become failed states due to endemic corruption and abuse of power.
