Inspector-General of Police Musa Hassan reiterated today that it was the mission of the police to be a dedicated force to protect the country and uphold the rule of law with the people's cooperation.

"In tandem with the new vision and mission, we aim to enhance internal security and public order; improve policing efficiency, wipe out national security-threatening activities by undesirable elements and boost police image in serving the public promptly and effectively," he told reporters in an interview to mark the 200th Police Day anniversary tomorrow.

In a Bernama report, Musa said objectives of the new vision and mission could not be achieved if police officers and lower ranks did not change their mindset.

"Changing their mindset is a bigger challenge than handling external threats," he said.

The mission and vision are part of Musa's efforts to implement the 125 recommendations proposed by the Special Royal Commission to Enhance the Management and Operations of the Royal Malaysia Police.

He said about 90 per cent of the recommendations by the commission headed by former Chief Justice Mohamed Dzaiddin Abdullah have been put into action while another four are in the process of being enforced.

Creating a knowledgeable and skilled human capital through training in the 96,000-strong police force is among other confidence-boosting measures taken by Musa in his drive to give a new image to the force.

Musa said a high degree of integrity, discipline, trustworthiness, discharging entrusted task responsibly, diligently and courageously are the crucial traits every policeman should have in the force.

He added that every policeman must be friendly and approachable and respect human rights.
