I refer to the letter Open burning still happening here - Selangor. and cannot agree more on this matter with the writer.

I just want to bring our attention to a more alarming situation and that is I realise that the government sector itself is a major contributor to this situation. And this is not only happening in
Selangor.

In Negeri Sembilan where I live, open burning is becoming a nuisance. The perpetrators are currently clearing up a place and burning up all the trees which they have chopped down - not at one spot but at several spots. Their reason is that the municipal council will not clear them.

Isn't this ridiculous? The local council is run by our proud Barisan Nasional leaders and they cannot arrange for the disposal of rubbish? There must be really a huge problem.

And what better place to experience open burning if not at a police station. A visit to the Ampang Jaya police station some time ago was a pleasant experience as the police officers were cleaning up the compound. However, when they started burning the rubbish, it clouded the entire area and motorists using the road in front of the police station could hardly see.

I am currently staying at a hostel in a university and it is no better. We have people burning rubbish day in day out and choking the residents. I just cannot understand why the rubbish can't be dealt with properly. I 'visited' the burning site and tried to put out the fires only to find out that they were burning among other things grass and old furniture.

Lastly, when I boarded a plane to fly out of the country from the LCCT some weeks ago, I could see at least 20 'hot spots' where open burning was occurring. They were all coming from plantations.

I really hope we can start doing something about this quickly as Mother Nature is already giving us some negative signs. At the end of the day, humankind will be the one suffering.
