In a bid to restore the people’s faith in enforcement agencies such as the police force and the MACC, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has been urged to appoint individuals with integrity to lead such bodies.

Academic Engku Ahmad Fadzil Engku Ali said it is an open secret that there are figures in the police force who are still highly trusted by the people and the Malay rulers.

Among them is Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) director Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay (above) who Engku Ahmad has proposed to be appointed as the next inspector-general of police (IGP).

“If Ayob Khan were to be appointed to lead the Royal Malaysia Police, it’s the right move and a popular decision.

“It is a popular decision among the people and the Malay rulers and it will be able to restore the people’s trust in the force,” he said.

He said this during a religious meeting with Anwar at the prime minister’s official residence, the Seri Perdana Complex, in Putrajaya last evening.

The former International Islamic University Malaysia lecturer reminded Anwar of his infamous “black eye” incident in 1998 where the PKR president was a “victim” of police brutality.

It was later discovered that the injury was inflicted by the IGP at that time.

“The trust the people have towards the integrity of the institution has been shaken,” Engku Ahmad said.

The current IGP Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani’s tenure under contract will end on Oct 3 next year.

Acryl Sani was due for mandatory retirement in October 2021 but his service as the top cop has been extended for two years on a contract basis.

Meanwhile, Engku Ahmad also said the royal institution has been a stabilising factor in Malaysian politics.

“Our country is unique in having many rulers in each state and they are the head of religion in each state.

“When there is endless politicking in the country, we see the rulers playing the role of stabilising and cooling down the situation by putting the country a step ahead, God willing,” the religious scholar said.
