A former Internal Security Act detainee will know on March 5 whether he will be charged for breaching restrictions placed on him.

Keadilan leader Dr Badrul Amin Bahron was scheduled to answer charges under Section 8(5) of the ISA before the Selayang Magistrates Court today.

However, according to his lawyer Saiful Izham, the prosecution received instructions from the Attorney-General's Chambers to extend Badrul's police bail of RM2,000 until next month.

"The prosecuting officer has not received any further orders," Saiful said.

Speaking to reporters later, Badrul said he has been unnecessarily inconvenienced by the authorities' delay on his case.

"I expected this, they summoned me and they did nothing after that. If they are truly serious, they would have continued [with the case]," said Badrul, a former International Islamic University lecturer.

"The prosecution should have acted on their own and not have to take instructions from [the AG's office in] Putrajaya," he said.

Arrested after prayers

Badrul was arrested in his hometown of Gombak after he had led prayers for ISA detainees last December at Keadilan vice-president Azmin Ali's office.

A month before that, Badrul had been released with conditions from the Kamunting Detention Centre in Perak where he was serving a two-year detention under the ISA from June 13.

However, his early reprieve came with restrictions to his movement and participation in ceramah (public talk) and he was required to report to the police every week

Badrul was arrested together with nine other party and reformasi activists last April under the ISA for alleged involvement in a 'militant' attempt to overthrow the government.

Five are still detained while the others have been released unconditionally.
