A fire has been reported at the Finance Ministry headquarters in Putrajaya today.
According to the ministry, the fire broke out at 2.26pm in the refuse room located at the Treasury Building’s ground floor, northern block.
“The small fire was successfully extinguished by the Putrajaya Fire and Rescue Department and is confirmed to have not spread to other parts of the Treasury Building. No injuries or losses have been reported,” it said in a statement.
The ministry added that it was still waiting for a report on the cause of the fire from the relevant authorities.
Meanwhile, Berita Harian quoted a Putrajaya Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson as saying that a ministry staff member first sighted the fire at a carpark at that level.
The fire also triggered smoke detectors, and the department was notified of the fire at 2.34pm. Twenty-three firefighters arrived at the scene with three fire engines seven minutes later.
“The premises’ emergency response team successfully contained the fire from spreading to the adjacent storeroom by using eight dry powder fire extinguishers.
“Putrajaya Fire and Rescue Department personnel and equipment then arrived to continue firefighting efforts until the fire was fully extinguished at 3.39pm,” the spokesperson said.
After taking precautions to ensure the fire would not reignite, the department’s fire investigation division and canine unit was deployed to investigate the cause of the fire and estimate losses.
Incidentally, today is also the first day Finance Minister Anwar Ibrahim clocked in at the ministry headquarters since being sworn in for his second stint last week. He reportedly showed up for work at 8am.
