PKR information chief Tian Chua (pix) has been detained on charges of 'attempted murder' for allegedly driving his Toyota Camry through a zinc gateway in an effort to reach Kampung Berembang, Ampang to prevent the demolition of squatter houses there this morning.
He was among the six arrested as activists, opposition politicians and the squatters attempted in vain to stop the property's developers from demolishing the houses.
At the Ampang Jaya police district headquarters this afternoon, Tian's lawyer Latheefa Koya said she had learnt from police that the developers had lodged a police report concerning the alleged incident.
The report alleged that Chua had driven his vehicle through a zinc gateway set up by the developers at Kampung Berembang to cordon off the area.
It is believed that workers were near the gateway at the time.
Remand order tomorrow?
Latheefa added that Chua was believed to have been detained under Section 307 of the Penal Code for 'attempted murder' which allows the police to detain him for 24 hours.
"After that, if the police wish to remand him further or charge him for the offence, they will have to bring him to a Magistrate's Court," said Latheefa, who is also PKR's Youth information chief.
Ampang Jaya OCPD ACP Amer Awal confirmed the arrest and said that a remand order would be sought tomorrow.
Party supporters are expected to gather tonight at the Ampang Jaya district police headquarters where Tian is being held for a vigil.
