PKR still negotiating 3 peninsula seats with PSM, Muda

PKR unveiled a line-up of 72 parliamentary candidates on Friday night (Oct 28), but among those conspicuously missing is the candidate for Sungai Siput.

Speaking to reporters after the announcement, PKR deputy president Mohd Rafizi Ramli said there is no announcement for three seats because negotiations are ongoing with PSM and Muda.

They are Sungai Siput and Tapah in Perak, and Sembrong in Johor.

“These have been allocated to PKR, but because it is flagged up by either Muda or PSM, we are going to seal the negotiation. Most probably it will be finalised in the next one or two days.

“So, we can’t announce first, because it depends on the outcome of the negotiation for the electoral pact,” he said.

Asked whether PSM and Muda are only seeking to contest in three seats, Rafizi (above) clarified that these are just the seats allocated to PKR in Peninsular Malaysia that are under negotiation.

“PSM and Muda flagged different seats for different parties, but for PKR it’s only those three seats,” he said.

PKR candidates in Sabah will only be announced on Oct 31, and Sarawak on Nov 1, he added.

Both PSM and Muda have sought an electoral pact with Pakatan Harapan for the coming election.

PSM chairperson Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj held the Sungai Siput seat for two terms from 2008 to 2018 after winning the seat while contesting under the PKR ticket.

During the 14th general election, however, he contested under the PSM ticket and lost to PKR’s Kesavan Subramaniam in a four-way contest.

Previously, sources told Malaysiakini that Jeyakumar would likely be given another chance to contest the seat, while Kesavan would be shifted to the Hutan Melintang state constituency.
