The Supplementary Food Programme (RMT) will see an increase of RM1 per student under Budget 2023.
The new RMT rate for Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia will be RM3.50 and RM4 respectively.
Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz announced that RM777 million was allocated for the RMT which will benefit 800,000 students and 7,300 canteen operators.
He also announced that early school aid (BAP), which was previously only for students from families earning below RM3,000, will be given to all students regardless of their families’ income status in 2023.
The amount for BAP will also be increased from RM100 to RM150.
The BAP cash aid is expected to be distributed in January 2023, Zafrul said.
“Hopefully this can lighten the burden of parents who have schooling children,” he said.
A total of RM825 million has been allocated for the BAP, which is a significant increase from last year’s allocation of RM450 million, he said.
Students also need a conducive and safe learning environment, he said, which is why the government has allocated RM2.3 billion in 2023 for these purposes.
Of that amount, RM1.1 billion is reserved for school maintenance and improvement purposes, covering national, vernacular, and religious schools.
The remaining RM1.2 billion is allocated for upgrading the infrastructure of needy schools in East Malaysia.
