The campaign to support suspended member of parliament for Batu Gajah, Fong Po Kuan, has received 'good response' from the public, said a party leader today.

DAP Pantai Remis state assemblyperson Nga Kor Ming today said the campaign which was launched after the suspension of Fong in December last year, has been supported by donations from the public.

Nga said that among others, the funds donated to the solidarity campaign are being used to organise public forums and dinners nationwide to alert the public on the need for parliamentary reforms.

"We tell people why we need reforms and how dissenting voices in parliament have been suppressed," said Nga.

He added that a signature campaign started in Batu Gajah has shown "overwhelming feedback" in support of Fong.

Party subsidies too

Nga also clarified that he, with three other state assemblypersons, have donated a total of RM2,400, or RM100 monthly each, for the duration of the suspension to Fong to help her finance the Batu Gajah service centre.

The other Perak state assemblypersons are Hu Chan You (Sitiawan), Seah Leong Peng (Pasir Bedamar) and Keong Meng Sing (Menglembu).

In addition, Fong also receives subsidies from the party when she needs to travel around the country, said Nga.

Fong, the youngest MP at 28, was alleged to have "brought down the dignity of the House" by accusing Parliamentary Speaker Mohamed Zahir Shah of "abusing his powers" and "preventing parliament from carrying out its duties" when he dismissed her motion to debate the Certificate in Legal Practice tampered results.

On Dec 11, the Dewan Rakyat voted 83 to 28 to suspend Fong, depriving her of her monthly RM5,000 in pay and allowances for six months.
