The Malaysian government invited UNHCR to Malaysia in 1970 because of the war in Vietnam which saw an exodus of Vietnamese from their country for obvious reasons.

Malaysia has played its role by allocating an island off Terengganu though our neighbours chased these refugees away from their shores. We have done more than enough.

To continue having the UNHCR office in Malaysia would mean that we are 'inviting' more foreigners to be refugees or asylum seekers in Malaysia.

I say let them instead gatecrash the high commissions or embassies of their desired country of residence in their own country itself.

My personal opinion is that the existence of the UNHCR office in Malaysia should be reviewed because allowing the facility here will encourage some to abuse it. But we must thank UNHCR for its existence and role here thus far.
