New multi-party caucus to explore parliamentary reforms

PARLIAMENT | Twelve MPs from across the political spectrum have formed a caucus to explore and pursue parliamentary reforms.
The “Caucus for Multi-party Democracy” will be led by Azalina Othman Said (BN-Pengerang) and Maria Chin Abdullah (Pakatan Harapan-Petaling Jaya).
In a statement, the duo said the caucus met yesterday and has decided that it will serve as a platform to benefit all MPs with the goal of making Parliament “truly professional and world-class”.
Among others, the caucus has agreed to pursue the introduction of “non-governmental business time”, facilitating the adoption of Private Members’ Bills, the digitisation of parliamentary processes, empowering Parliamentary Select Committees and holding stakeholder engagements.
“Additionally, we are concerned about the gender imbalance in the leadership of the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara.
“We see the importance of having deputy speakers at both Houses that reflect diversity in terms of gender, region and partisanship,” said Azalina and Chin in a joint statement.
A parliamentary caucus is a loose grouping of MPs over a common agenda.
Other caucus members are Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (Harapan-Kulim Bandar Baharu), Hasanuddin Mohd Yunus (Harapan-Hulu Langat), Dr Xavier Jayakumar (Independent-Kuala Langat), Anthony Loke Siew Fook (Harapan-Seremban), Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof (PN-Alor Gajah), Wong Shu Qi (Harapan-Kluang), Madius Tangau (Harapan-Tuaran), Darell Leiking (Warisan-Penampang), Larry Sng (PBM-Julau) and Baru Bian (PSB-Selangau).
Notable non-participating parties are PAS, MCA and MIC.
