Ayer Keroh assemblyperson Kerk Chee Yee today branded the government insensitive towards the plight of the public, alleging that it lacked understanding between basic food necessities and non-necessities.

This comes after Malacca’s Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry director Norena Jaafar advised the public to consume fewer eggs amidst the rising prices of the protein source.

In a statement, Kerk questioned if the government would further call on the public to refrain from consuming other food when its prices increase.

“Will the government call on the rakyat to eat less chicken, oil and other basic food necessities when their prices continue to rise?

“What does the government expect the rakyat to eat then?” he questioned.

In a viral YouTube video, Norlela told reporters that “as consumers, if we know the prices of eggs have risen, if possible, we could eat fewer eggs”.

“If we eat around 20 eggs a week, we could reduce it to 10 to 15 eggs. It shouldn’t be an issue, that is our lifestyle,” she had said.

This sparked the ire of Kerk, who said it wasn’t the number of eggs that should be reduced, but cabinet members.

“It is undeniable that the increase in prices is due to various external factors.

“However, the government cannot convince the rakyat that they have put in their best effort in forming a mitigating plan to help our country’s economic problems.

“What should be reduced aren’t eggs but a number of cabinet members who are unable to solve the economic issues faced by the rakyat,” Kerk said.

Effective yesterday, the prices of eggs have risen by 2 sen, with its new ceiling price at RM0.45 per egg for Grade A eggs, RM0.43 for Grade B and RM0.41 in Peninsular Malaysia.

The new price is effective until Aug 31.
