Japan's coast guard will take part in anti-piracy exercises with Malaysia and Thailand in Thai waters to combat armed attacks on the high seas, the Japanese embassy here said Thursday.

The Japanese coast guard patrol vessel Yashima will visit Langkawi island, the site of Malaysia's main naval port, from Jan 30 to Feb 4.

Since 2000, the Japanese coast guard has conducted combined exercises in conjunction with port visits to Southeast Asian countries.

"Yashima's visits to Southeast Asian region is to promote international collaboration and cooperation in strengthening measures to combat armed robbery at sea," the embassy said in a statement.

The joint exercise will be held in Thai waters on Feb 2 and will involve eight patrol boats from Malaysia and Thailand, two helicopters and members of Malaysia's special operations forces.
