I refer to the letter Cyprus: Turkey legally right to intervene. It must be understood that countries that support Turkey's occupation of Cyprus are the same countries that support Israel's occupation of Palestine. There is a link between the two.

The fall of the Ottoman Empire after World War 1 ended the last bastion of Islamic imperialism for over 1,400 years. The holy city of Jerusalem was finally wrestled out of Islamic hands and was now safely in Judeo-Christian hands. After the fall of the Ottoman Empire, Turkey's newly Western-elected president, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk declared Turkey as a 'secular' state.

The Islamic dress code and physical appearances according to Islamic practice were banned. Muslim men were forced to shave their beards. Muslim women were forced to remove their headscarfs.

So why are the same countries that support Israel also supporting Turkey despite Turkish troops clearly being the aggressors in Cyprus and Greek Cypriots the victims? It is theorised that if Turkey's secularism fails, it will mean the end of secularism in the Islamic world.

That is why the Western world turns a blind eye towards the crimes of Turkey in Cyprus. In a way, the Greek Cypriots are the 'sacrificial lambs' meant to prevent a clash of civillisations or a return to the days of the Christian Crusades and the Islamic Jihad.

While I also do not want to see a Muslim-Christian war, the Western nations are not advancing peace between Islam and Christianity in a comprehensive and proper manner. Allowing the Turkish military to continue its occupation of Cyprus just because Ataturk empowered the Turkish military as the guardians of Turkish secularism is shortsighted.

Basically, this is based on the premise of 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'. It is this same mentality that encouraged the West to support Saddam Hussein's use of mustard gas and nerve agents on Iranian civillians. Saddam Hussein was, between the years of 1983 to 1989, a proxy of the West against the perceived threat of Islamic fundamentalism coming from Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran.

Clearly, the Western world must end its hypocrisy. It must stop endorsing Turkey's occupation of Cyprus just to protect secularism in the Islamic world. Peace between the world's Christian and Muslim populations can be achieved. It, however, requires the West to end its meddling in Muslim countries and to end its support for the dictators and tyrants it placed there.

Sadly, even as of now, Ethiopia (a Christian country) has invaded Somalia (a Muslim country) with US support in an attempt to overthrow the populist government and install a pro-Western puppet.

Terrorism will end only when Muslims finally get the right to self-determination. The West must allow Muslims the right to elect leaders of their own choice and not just in Afghanistan, Iraq and Lebanon. The West should not block the blossoming of democracy in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Jordan and Turkey.
