Again and again we hear of the excesses of the Rela unit and the religious enforcement authorities when carrying out their duties.

It is quite a ridiculous state of affairs when the police themselves need warrants before they can enter premises but Rela personnel and religious enforcement officers are given a free hand to break down door and enter premises.

While there is off course the need to uphold and enforce national and state laws, this cannot and should not be done by breaking the law itself. Let's also not forget the rights of the individuals involved and the often reported excesses of overzealous 'part-time' enforcement personnel.

It is time that all enforcement activities with regards to entering a premises be done only by the police or with a police presence.
