The police have obtained some leads into the incident where explosives were hurled at the home of senior state minister and Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) chief William Mawan.

Two Molotov cocktails were hurled into Mawan's house early yesterday morning but no one was hurt.

"They are checking into the details," SPDP deputy secretary-general Paul Igai told malaysiakini today.

The incident has caused some media frenzy today with the Borneo Post splashing across its front page a bold banner heading ' Minister's Home Bombed.'

Mawan, who is State Social Development and Urbanisation Minister, was away in Kuala Lumpur when the incident happened at 1.30 am.

Members of the household found that two petrol bombs had been thrown at the house in Jalan Stapok at the outskirts of Kuching City .

While no one was hurt, the petrol bombs did some damage to the car porch.

Kuching district police chief ACP Wong Wai Loong said a family member called the police after the petrol bombs exploded.

It is learnt one of the petrol bombs was aimed at a first floor window but it failed to shatter the glass and fell to the ground while another sparked a small fire at the car porch.

Arising from a pub incident?

Mawan told the media by phone yesterday that he did not think the motive for the attack was political.

Mawan said he was informed of the incident by his maid.

"I don't know who could have done this. Maybe it's a New Year prank," he said over the telephone.

The police are believed to be working on clues that the incident could be connected with the activities of one of the minister's sons after a late-night outing to a pub recently.

Police are still investigating, and are expected to make a breakthrough within the next few days.

In the meantime, a police spokesperson said more police patrols have been mounted in the area.

The incident, in a generally quiet Kuching, has shocked some of Mawan's cabinet colleagues and fellow party leaders.

It has also led to much speculation as to the real motive for the Molotov cocktail attack on the minister's home.
