With reference to the report 'Men must pledge to end domestic violence', the All Women's Action Society (Awam) would like to correct some factual errors in your report .

The White Ribbon Campaign (WRC) was initiated in Malaysia four years ago, not since 1985. The WRC is a global effort, first held in 1991 by a group of Canadian men who felt that they had a responsibility to urge men to speak out against violence against women, after the tragic murder of women engineering students in Montreal.

The year 1985 actually saw a workshop and exhibition on violence against women, organised by a group of women and men in conjunction with International Women's Day.

The two-day event, the first of its kind in Malaysia, inspired the formation of several women's organisations - one of which is Awam. Furthermore, the 'Break the Silence' campaign was held in the mid-1990s and is not connected to the WRC as your report suggested.
