Delegates rang warning bells that Islam faced both domestic and international threats during the debates on the resolution on religious and social issues in the 57th Umno General Assembly this morning.

All delegates supported the concept of Islam Hadhari and called for stricter measure in dealing with social ills such as drug addiction, Mat Rempit, rape, theft and others.

Here are some views from the delegates on the podium:

Shahbudin Yahaya, Umno Penang delegate

We must be careful of those who spread false rumours and playing with accusations concerning Muslims. Why do people believe these things so easily? Why would anyone want to do this? This continues to haunt Muslims.

There are NGOs like Inter-faith Council (IFC), Article 11 coalition, Sisters In Islam (SIS) and Komas (Community Communications Centre of Malaysia) who are supported and funded by this foreign body called Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAF).

Komas advocates religious liberalism and pluralism by making videos and pamphlets on religion. The threat to Islam's stability in not only from those in the country but there's also systematic threats from outsiders using insiders to turn Muslims among themselves.

IFC have questioned the special position of Islam in the federal constitution time and again. The focus given by IFC is that other religions should have the same rights as Islam in the country. They even ask for Islam to be treated the same philosophical religions like Bahai. You cannot do this because it's diluting Islam's position.

SIS wants to weaken the syariah courts. Then there is the Penang Global Ethic Project that carries out projects that teaches students to treat all religions equally in order to get along. It is treating as though we're atheists and free thinkers but we're not, we're Muslims and we cannot accept this.

We cannot equate Islam with other religions. We need to defend that there is no religion above Islam. The government must be wary and monitors such NGOs that are taking advantage of our generosity.

The government must check KAF's status. Despite helping with our baseline studies, they are also questioning the special rights of Islam, the quota system, the rights of non-Malays to get scholarships and they do this without basing it on real facts. We cannot let them be here.

Recurring drug addicts should no longer be kept in rehabilitation institute (Pusat Serenti) . We should stop spending money on them just to rehabilitate them. We should just send them to an island and let them eat worms and moss. They treat the rehabilitation institute as a place with free food and free housing. We can channel the money to a better place...

I once saw pictures of a minister's wife who was wearing such revealing clothes. She is, of course ,a celebrity but it is so embarrassing (malu) for women to see. Of course, it's 'syok' to watch but not until so much is exposed. And I'm talking about the wife of a minister. Please don't wear that because we teach our children to cover up. How do we explain to them when we read the newspapers and see such pictures? Please be serious in addressing this issue...

Don't dare play with fire and question the position Islam, otherwise they'll get burnt. Whoever that tries to question our rights should be arrested under the ISA (Internal Security Act) and we'll put them away.

We can tell PAS that they can define Islam in their own way. However, I see Islam Hadhari as a strong challenge to PAS' idea of Islam. With the leadership under Pak Lah, Islam Hadhari will win over the people in Kelantan. We'll give PAS a run for their money.

Shamsul Najmi Shamsuddin, Umno Youth representative

Don't anybody question or threaten our Islamic rights as stipulated in the constitution. Don't argue among yourselves or else you will fail and lose youth strength. We need to go back to the roots and teach the kampung folks what Islam Hadhari is all about.
