HKL seeks non-medical volunteers to help ease workload
One of the busiest hospitals in Malaysia, the Kuala Lumpur Hospital, is seeking non-medical volunteers to help ease healthcare workers' workload.
Community organisation Malaysia First Aid Society (MyFast) said it received a request for help from the hospital, as healthcare workers struggle to keep up with the influx of patients.
"The MyFast team received a letter from HKL seeking voluntary assistance to help healthcare workers who are not carrying extra workload.

Community organisation Malaysia First Aid Society (MyFast) said it received a request for help from the hospital, as healthcare workers struggle to keep up with the influx of patients.
"The MyFast team received a letter from HKL seeking voluntary assistance to help healthcare workers who are not carrying the extra workload.
"As such, we would like to invite anyone who is interested and has time to spare to assist HKL healthcare workers in non-medical duties there," it said in a Facebook posting yesterday.
MyFast said among the duties for volunteers are sending patients to the wards, changing oxygen supply for patients, taking the patients' vital signs and serving food to Covid-19 and non-Covid-19 patients.
Volunteers may be placed in various locations at the hospitals, including the vaccination centre (from 8am to 5pm), in the wards or the emergency and trauma department, either in shifts or during office hours.
All volunteers will be provided with training before their duties, it said.
When contacted, MyFast said the positions are unpaid, while efforts are underway to hasten vaccination for volunteers.
"The names of volunteers involved will be forwarded to the Health Ministry for consideration for allowance," it added.

Earlier, Malaysiakini reported that HKL was facing a severe shortage of beds as it continues to accept both Covid-19 and non-Covid-19 patients.
This had forced healthcare workers to conduct emergency procedures on the floor of the emergency and trauma department.
HKL is facing a surge of patients not only because of the spike in Covid-19 cases, but also as it accepts referrals for non-Covid patients from the nearby Hospital Ampang.
Hospital Ampang has been converted into a full Covid-19 hospital.
HKL hospital director Heric Corray said to cope, HKL has postponed all elective surgeries since December 2020 and has transferred non-critical patients to the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital.
