Orang Asli communities and others living in the interiors of Kelantan will be inoculated using the single dose Covid-19 vaccine from China’s CanSino Biologics.
De facto immunisation minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the first shipment of the CanSino vaccine is expected in July.
"Part of the (CanSino) vaccine supply will be given to Kelantan, especially for those living in the interiors and the Orang Asli in Gua Musang," he said at a press conference in Kota Bharu today.
"The vaccine is suitable so that health officers don't need to enter Orang Asli villages twice to give them shots," Khairy added.
The Drug Control Authority (DCA) approved vaccines from CanSino and the US’ Johnson & Johnson on Tuesday.
Health Minister Dr Adham Baba has said that Malaysia would be getting 3.5 million doses of CanSino in stages.
Adham said that the single-dose vaccine would mainly be used in rural areas where it was difficult for people to get double dose vaccines.
CanSino said that its vaccine may have reduced efficacy after some time and that a booster shot may be needed after six months.
"A booster shot six months later led to a seven to 10-times increase in neutralising antibody levels, so we expect in this case efficacy could reach over 90 percent,” the company's chief scientific officer Zhu Tao was quoted as saying by Reuters in April.
