The Legal Profession Qualifying Board will meet tomorrow to decide on the fate of Khalid Yusoff, the Certificate in Legal Practice examination (CLP) director involved in the mark-tampering scandal.

"We will resolve it tomorrow and make a statement after that," said board chairperson Ainum Mohamed Saaid when confronted by reporters outside her office. The outgoing attorney-general was responding to a question on whether Khalid had been asked to go on leave or suspended.

Though she did not elaborate on the present status of Khalid, reporters saw Khalid in the office today.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Departmnent Dr Rais Yatim said yesterday he had asked Ainum to request Khalid to take leave immediately.

The Bar Council and several opposition leaders have also called for the suspension of Khalid from his post pending police investigations.

Khalid and two clerks were questioned by police yesterday on the alleged marks tampering in the July CLP examination.

Police report

The investigation came about after board member and chief registrar of Federal Court Abdul Wahab Said Ahmad lodged a police report late last week.

The CLP controversy started when the Qualifying Board nullified the July CLP examination results on Nov 12. The annulment met with strong protests from more than 900 affected students.

Following that, the board had met and decided last Tuesday that new results would be released as there were "substantial irregularities" between examiners' marks on answer scripts and the master sheet compiled and tabled by Khalid.

The total number of students who scored clear passes was slashed by almost half from 232 to 119 after the regrading.

300 appeals

Abdul Wahab told reporters today that the board had received over 300 appeals from students who were dissatisfied with their new results. They were mostly from students who have earlier obtained clear passes in the July CLP examination but failed after the regrading.

"We are studying the appeals. We will make a statement regarding the appeals tomorrow," said Abdul Wahab.

The other board members include Federal Court judge Siti Norma Yaakob, High Court judge Abdul Wahab Patail, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Asso Prof Shamsuddin Suhor, and Bar Council chairman Mah Weng Kwai.
