Roads to be closed after latest Suke accident

Existing parts of the Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang Elevated Expressway (Suke) will be closed, namely at Taman Leng Seng and Jalan Alam Damai, after an accident at a Suke construction site claimed the lives of three workers yesterday (March 22).
“In order to guarantee the safety of the public, Suke has received approval for the full closure of the existing roads at Taman Leng Seng (Zone 2) and Jalan Alam Damai (Zone 3).
“Meanwhile, at Persiaran Alam Damai (Zone 1), Suke needs to ensure there is an alternative route if they want to close the road there,” said Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) director-general Mohd Shuhaimi Hassan in a statement today.
This morning, the MHA met with the Works Ministry, the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (Dosh), the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), representatives from Suke, contractors, and other stakeholders.
Works Minister Fadillah Yusof called for the meeting after a construction crane collapsed along Suke yesterday morning and crushed a car, killing three and seriously injuring one more.
The accident occurred near the Puncak Banyan condominium along Persiaran Alam Damai in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.
In the statement, Mohd Shuhaimi said the meeting also decided for all construction work at the site to be stopped, aside from rescue efforts and structure stabilising work.
Instructions were also given for the examination of all launching gantries and beams which are already at the Suke construction site, he said.
He also noted that Dosh and CIDB are both investigating the cause of the accident and will table a report to the government.
Meanwhile, Dosh director-general Zailee Dollah told Malaysiakini that the meeting discussed the best mechanism to increase the operational safety standards for Suke’s construction.
He also said they discussed the best method to extract the body of the third victim, which is still trapped.
“So far, Dosh has issued a notice forbidding all crane-lifting activities at Suke’s CA3 package,” he said.
