COMMENT | Why elections? Vote for new PM in Parliament
COMMENT | The view of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong that Parliament sitting can convene during an emergency is perhaps the best indicator of a return to political normalcy. Hopefully.
For the past year, Malaysians have been living in abnormal times, with widespread suffering and uncertainties. Attempting to revolutionise our way of life under the Covid-19 pandemic is easier said than done. Let’s be honest about it; we have been groping in the dark.
As the nation continues to be on autopilot since the Sheraton putsch a year ago, Malaysians are lost and unable to navigate their way out of the convoluted maze.
Imagine a scenario of a blind government leading a blind citizenry. This is not a “new normal”; it is a clear, absolute abnormality.
So, we welcome the royal pronouncement as the long-awaited bout of fresh air...
Francis you had quoted Agong's press statement which clearly stated that parliament can only sit if and when PM advised the Agong to convene.So as someone rightly pointed out "would a death row man fix his execution date? " Any way are you confident that any MP has the support gf a majority of MPs? Anwar has 91 MPs and as opposition leader was unable to defeat any of budget proposed by the PM.The 2020 budget was passed even though Anwar had earlier proclaimed the collapse of Moo's government! Any government after Moo would still be an unstable government if with UMNO support so why change the government ? Don't you think it is best to wait till August and see whether the Agong would wants to extend the emergency or ask Moo to face a vote of confidence? If Moo fails the vote then elections could be held at third quarter of 2021 by which time at least 50% of our population including seniors would have been vaccinated. Many are actually fed up with the politicians and might not vote. However the next GE is no longer dependent on older voters as millions of those who reached 18 are eligible to vote.These young voters are the ones who would determine the future of our nation. However, as pointed out by a local professor, the government must ensure that appropriate steps are taken to ensure these new voters could participate in the election otherwise we might have a serious problem with the youths.
