Come year 2007, the Gerakan-initiated Wawasan Open University hopes to give students who failed to enter university a second chance.

Speaking to reporters at the sidelines of the party's annual delegates conference today, Gerakan secretary-general Chia Kwang Chye said the university would serve those who are too poor to enter private universities as well as mature students.

"It is not a conventional university but an open university that is affordable to the masses, and allows those unable to enter university a second chance. Most importantly it brings affordable education to the younger generation," he said.

Chia also revealed that the party would be training members in areas of politics, economics and social development to groom them as future leaders.

Among areas covered in the 50 training modules would be an intensive course on the party's history, objectives and struggles, added Chia.

"This is a pre-requisite for members to qualify for contesting in party elections," he said.
