Kubang Pasu: Dr M did not top nominations

Umno Kubang Pasu today clarified that former party president Dr Mahathir Mohamad did not top the nominations to contest to be a delegate from the division for the Umno general assembly this November.
Umno Kubang Pasu today clarified that former party president Dr Mahathir Mohamad did not top the nominations to contest to be a delegate from the division for the Umno general assembly this November.
In fact, Mahathir had only secured 15 nominations from the 143 branches in the division, placing him second from last among the 17 candidates.
However, Mahathir's son Mukhriz garnered 50 nominations, making him the second highest after division secretary Samsudin Ahmad who received 97 nominations.
Previously, malaysiakini reported that Mahathir was leading the pack with 79 nominations.
Commenting on this, Samsudin said initially the former premier was expected to receive a high number of nominations from the branches in the division, which he had headed prior to his retirement in 2003.
Contacted today, he said based on the findings of those monitoring the nominations, who attended all the branch meetings, 79 of them were expected to nominate Mahathir after expressing support for him.
However, he added that this was not the official results.
Late confirmation
Samsudin said the small number of nominations for Mahathir could be due to the former premier's late confirmation of wanting to contest to be a delegate.
So only 15 branches were able to nominate him, added the division secretary, who also ruled out the possibility of branches retracting their nominations for Mahathir following pressure from certain quarters.
He said the branches were free to nominate whoever they wanted, including Mahathir.
"Umno Kubang Pasu has never influenced any of the branches. The branches decide for themselves," he stressed.
In view of this, Samsudin said all quarters must accept the decision on the delegates, which will be made at the division meet on Sept 9.
According to him, division chief Johari Baharum, who is also deputy internal security minister, had met with Mahathir regarding his decision to contest.
"Mahathir replied that as an Umno member, he had the right to contest," he said.
Meanwhile, the division's executive secretary Mohd Hailmi said nominations from the branches closed on Aug 20.
"We have updated (the list) and Tun (Mahathir) has 15 nominations, while his son Mukhriz got 50 nominations," he added when contacted.
According to him, a total of 43 people were nominated as delegates and 17 have confirmed their decision to contest - including Mahathir and Mukhriz (right) - for the division's seven seats at the party general assembly this November.
A total of 508 delegates from the 143 branches will attend the meeting, which will be officiated by Kedah Menteri Besar Mahadzir Khalid.
The division will send 13 delegates to attend the Umno general assembly. Seven of them will be elected while the remaining six will attend the party assembly by virtue of their posts in the division - division chief, deputy chief, vice-chief, Wanita chief, Youth chief and Puteri chief.
