SINGAPORE (AFP) - The Singapore government today extended its condolences following the death of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah.

A foreign ministry statement said President SR Nathan extended his "deepest sympathies and condolences" to the monarch's widow, Queen Siti Aishah.

President Nathan and Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong also sent messages of condolence to Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, who has taken over until a new king is chosen, as well as to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Sultan Salahuddin died at the Gleneagles Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur today at the age of 75.

Mahathir declared a week of mourning for the king, who had been hospitalised since undergoing heart surgery in Singapore almost two months ago.

He said a new king would be named within four weeks.
