Security officers save smuggled wok-bound anteaters
The animals, estimated to be worth RM56,800, were found last night in 15 baskets at an illegal jetty in state of Kelantan, said Hussin Abdon, commander of the General Operations Force (GOF).
The baskets were found in a lorry which was waiting for a boat to smuggle the anteaters across the border, Hussin was quoted as saying by Bernama.
The scaly mammals, also known as pangolins, were believed to have come from Johor and were bound for restaurants in a neighbouring country, Bernama said, without revealing which one.
The lorry's 50-year old driver was detained for questioning but was later released on bail, Hussin said.
The anteaters, a protected species, would either be handed over to the zoo or released into the jungles.
