Japan on Thursday said stalled global trade talks must re-start by mid-November this year and that a breakthrough in market access and agriculture should be forged in 2007.

"Aim for the resumption of the negotiations at the latest in mid-November," Japan's Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Toshihiro Nikai said in a statement.

Nikai, who is attending regional economic talks in the Malaysian capital, said WTO members must establish a plan to tackle non-agriculture market access and agriculture "as soon as possible in 2007."

"All WTO members will tackle the negotiations with the strong political resolve to make necessary concessions toward reaching an agreement," he said.

The faltering World Trade Organization (WTO) Doha trade round was suspended last month amid a bitter dispute between Europe and the United States over farm tariffs and subsidies.

Southeast Asian nations said Wednesday that the stalled global trade talks must resume before the end of the year, and that a way forward must be found for agriculture and market access.
