The Kamunting Correctional Centre (Kemta) near Taiping, Perak, will be placed under an enhanced movement control order (MCO) beginning tomorrow until Jan 12 next year.
The order comes exactly eight weeks after the centre emerged from the previous round of enhanced MCO.
In a press statement today, Senior Minister (Defence Cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob said there has been a surge in Covid-19 cases in the centre.
Up to Dec 24, he said 50 cases have been detected at the correctional centre, out of 1,490 detainees screened.
“Upon advice and risk assessment by the Health Ministry, the government has agreed to implement an enhanced MCO at Kemta, including the staff quarters, from Dec 30, 2020, until Jan 12, 2021.
“The implementation of this enhanced MCO is aimed at containing existing clusters and preventing its spread to other prisoners, staff, family members and the community outside Kemta,” he said.
Previously, Kemta was among nine prisons and detention centres placed under enhanced MCO from Oct 22 until Nov 4.
