Localised emergencies declared in Gerik and Bugaya, by-elections on hold

Localised emergencies have been declared in Gerik, Perak and Bugaya, Sabah, which were facing upcoming by-elections to prevent the risk of Covid-19 transmission.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah had assented to the suggestion of a localised emergency under the provisions of Article 150 (1) of the Federal Constitution, which is allowed if the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is satisfied that a state of emergency can be declared in an area or the whole of Malaysia...

The EC previously announced that the by-elections were due to be held on Jan 21.
