Umno supreme council member Annuar Musa has denied that party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's move to reaffirm support for Perikatan Nasional (PN) was a U-turn.
Annuar (above), who is also the BN secretary-general, said that Zahid had instead made his own decision to put national interest above politics.
"The Umno president's decision was right. The people and country come first, not politics," he said in a Facebook post today.
Yesterday, Zahid announced that his party would strengthen its cooperation with all PN members.
This came a week after Umno threatened to pull its support from PN - amid tensions with Bersatu and speculation that Umno MPs were backing PKR president Anwar Ibrahim's bid to become prime minister.
Annuar was responding to a MalaysiaNow article which cited sources as claiming that Zahid's statement yesterday came after a heated four-hour meeting in which state Umno leaders rebuked the party president for backing Anwar.
Annuar, however, said the report was "clearly not true" and that a "meeting of the length did not exist".
Besides reaffirming support for PN, Zahid also called for a political ceasefire so that tackling the Covid-19 pandemic and its economic impact on the people can be prioritised.
Commenting on this, Annuar said that political upheaval would not solve the pandemic.
"Changing the prime minister will not destroy the virus. Elections will not save the people but cause more chaos.
"The government needs stability. The government also needs time. A budget is needed to fund various actions including operations to protect people's lives," he added.
