Return voters' mandate, reform institutions - Harapan after SRC verdict
Pakatan Harapan has hailed the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s verdict against Pekan MP Najib Abdul Razak as a win for those who voted for change in the 14th general election.
To ensure scandals like 1MDB do not happen again, the former ruling coalition called for the “people’s mandate” to be returned so that institutional reform can take place.
Pakatan Harapan has hailed the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s verdict against Pekan MP Najib Abdul Razak as a win for those who voted for change in the 14th general election.
To ensure scandals like 1MDB do not happen again, the former ruling coalition called for the “people’s mandate” to be returned so that institutional reform can take place.
“This decision is a big win for the Malaysian people.
“The judicial process would not have started if the rakyat did not rise up to give Harapan a win over BN in GE14,” the Harapan presidential council said in a statement this evening.
Thanking former attorney-general Tommy Thomas and others for their contributions, it noted that discrepancies in 1MDB were first raised in Parliament by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim back in 2011.
“The (Harapan) presidential council believes that comprehensive institutional reform needs to be done to ensure the political climate that allowed for large-scale decay and damage during the BN administration does not happen again.
“This can only be done by returning the people’s mandate to its rightful place,” Harapan said.
The statement was signed by Anwar, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
In late February, the Harapan government collapsed after the “Sheraton Move” political coup which saw Bersatu pulling out of the coalition and Dr Mahathir Mohamad resigning as prime minister.
After he formed the Perikatan Nasional government with BN, PAS, GPS, PBS and Star, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin was later sworn in as Mahathir’s successor.
During Harapan’s 22 months in power, Najib was investigated and charged and faced five separate 1MDB-related criminal trials.
The former prime minister was convicted today of all seven charges involving one of the trials - the RM42 million SRC International case.
The other four cases against him are the RM2.28 billion 1MDB abuse of power case, the 1MDB audit tampering case, the RM6.6 billion IPIC criminal breach of trust case and the RM27 million SRC International money laundering case.
He is the first former Malaysian premier to have been charged and convicted of a crime.
