Difficult for PN govt to function with razor-thin majority: Shabery

The narrow vote result to remove former Court of Appeal judge Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof as Dewan Rakyat speaker yesterday showed that it's difficult for the government of the day to function, said a former Umno minister.
According to Ahmad Shabery Cheek (above), the result showed that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had indeed enough support to form the government, however, the wafer-thin majority had led to an unstable administration.
"The test in Parliament yesterday proved that the decision by Yang di-Pertuan Agong was right, that Muhyiddin had the numbers to form the government.
"But the majority is too thin which shows that the government is unstable.
"Especially when it comes to budget tabling sessions. A lot of voting will take place," he said on Facebook today.
The former minister of agriculture and agro-based industry added that in the current situation, lawmakers would not be able to go anywhere.
This included Muhyiddin (below), other ministers and their deputies, as they all have to be in Parliament, he said.
In the motion to remove Ariff yesterday, the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government obtained 111 votes against 109 votes by the opposition.
Batu Pahat MP Rashid Hasnon did not vote as he was in the speaker's chair while Kota Marudu MP Maximus Ongkili was on medical leave.
Ariff was replaced by former Election Commission chairperson Azhar Azizan Harun.
Shabery is of the opinion that the best way to solve the unstable situation is to get a mandate from the people.
"It's hard for the government to function. The best way (is to) dissolve Parliament, get a new mandate," he said.
No vote was taken when Azhar was sworn in, on grounds that the opposition did not nominate another candidate in time.
