An Orang Asli, Prof Dr Bahari Belaton, has been appointed dean of the Centre for Computer Science Studies at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and director of National Advanced IPv6 Centre (NAv6), to replace Prof Dr Rosni Abdullah @ Mustafa for both positions effective yesterday, May 2.
In a statement today, USM said that with the two appointments, Bahari became the first Orang Asli to be appointed as a dean and to hold the two heads of department posts simultaneously at the country's institution of higher learning.
According to the statement, Bahari, a native of the Semai tribe from Kampung Orang Asli Tangkai, Cermin, Perak, had extensive experience and had travelled abroad to pursue his first degree in Computer Science at the South Australian Institute of Technology, Australia, in 1989.
"He has expertise in the fields of 'Scientific Data Visualisation, Computer Graphics and Network Security' for more than 24 years with USM, and during that time, he achieved great success in academic and research development," the statement said.
