Is the government scrapping the RM1.5 billion mega incinerator project proposed in Broga?

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said although no final decision has been made, the government is however re-studying the viability of the project.

Responding to a reporter's question as to whether the cabinet had decided to cancel the project during its meeting two days ago, he replied that was not so.

"There is no decision yet. There is a need for a incinerator as it is a facility for the people but we are studying whether it is suitable," he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

The premier said the government will also study the project's financial aspects and other issues that need to be addressed.

This is the first time the government has signalled a review of its decision to go ahead with the multi-billion ringgit project that was strongly opposed by local residents.

Waiting for official word

Broga No Incinerator committee spokesperson Alice Lee said when contacted said the residents have also heard of rumours that the government may cancel the project.

However, she said the residents will wait for official confirmation from the Department of Environment (DOE) before getting excited over the statement.

"I have learnt not to trust politicians. Today they can say 'Yes' and tomorrow they can say 'No'. I will only believe the news if it is announced by DOE," she told malaysiakini this afternoon.

The multi-billion ringgit project was earlier relocated to Broga from the heavily populated southern suburb of Puchong after strong protests from the residents there.

Residents in Broga, near Semenyih, were also against the project and had proposed alternative waste management methods.

They have taken the government to court in an attempt to stop the project. They have cleared two legal hurdles thus far.

Their persistent opposition against the project has also prompted the elected representative in the area, a government backbencher, to voice concerns over the proposed incinerator.
