On behalf of the residents of Belair Condiminium (of which I am a resident), other hill residents as well as those living in Lorong Basong, Damansara Heights, facing the hill, we desperately urge Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to stop work on the plan to build five townhouses by demolishing a hill of which the gradient far exceeds that forbidden by the project's environmental impact assessment report's regulations.

The hill is situated at the foot of the condominium and its demolition would most certainly unsettle the entire land structure leading to situations such as that of Highland Towers and more recently at Ulu Kelang. There will also be land clearing in a situation where there is no access road that will result in massive soil erosion in the entire area and especially affecting residents of Lorong Basong who live barely 50 feet away.

The hill gradient is estimated at 50 degrees and that far exceeds the maximum 35 degrees stipulated under the EIA regulations whereby. In fact, the cabinet has issued guidelines banning and development at areas which have a 35 degree gradient and above.

DBKL has approved this development which violates both the project's EIA and cabinet's guidelines. We have been informed that DBKL has not adopted the EIA and cabinet guidelines and the therefore the mayor has discretionary power to act independently.

We call upon the prime minister and federal territories minister to challenge DBKL and stop this project immediately. We wish to point out that we are law-abiding residents but we will be forced to demonstrate against DBKL if this project continues to be implemented.
