Kamarulzaman Teh, the "longest" political detainee of Malaysia, who was earlier reported as having lost his sight and is unable to walk, is appealing for assistance to get through his old age.

Pak Zaman (as he is known), 81, lived alone by himself for the past few years in Temerloh, Pahang but was brought to Kuala Lumpur and admitted to Universiti Hospital a month ago to receive treatment for his eyes.

The British detained him under the Emergency Rule for 14 years and he was further detained under the Internal Security Act for another eight years after Independence.

According to Siti Nor Hamid Tuah, who has been taking care of Pak Zaman in Kuala Lumpur, both eyes of Pak Zaman have been operated on.

"There is only a 50-50 chance for recovery. Although a month has passed after the operation, his eyesight has yet to recover and he says he can see only light but not forms.

"The problem we are facing is that we need assistance to look after Pak Zaman, who requires help round the clock, especially in taking food, bathing and going to the toilet. We have tried to get a helper, but no one was available full time.

"We have even surveyed nursing homes but they were not suitable for Pak Zaman's condition. Furthermore, the fees are high (around RM1,000) and beyond our means," said Siti Nor.

Appeal

Pak Zaman had requested that he be sent back to Temerloh, but no relatives or friends are willing or able to look after him there, said Siti Nor.

Pak Zaman is staying in Siti Nor's house as he has further appointments with the doctors.
