MACC has lodged a police report over an alleged plot to discredit its chief commissioner Latheefa Koya.
Although no details were revealed to the media, Malaysiakini learned that the report also mentioned an image, which is believed to be a meme, spread via Whatsapp.
News of the plot surfaced after Latheefa revealed audio recordings of former premier Najib Abdul Razak's telephone conversations on the 1MDB scandal.
The report was lodged by Latheefa's special officer for legal affairs, Sasha Lyna Abdul Latif, with the Putrajaya district police headquarters today.
The report stated that on the night of Jan 10, two days after the audio recordings were released, an image related to Latheefa was received via Whatsapp.
Speaking to reporters later, Sasha Lyna said this is believed to be a form of intimidation.
"This was to tarnish the integrity and dignity of our chief commissioner.
"We believe this is (an act of) intimidation in response for what she did (release the recordings) at the press conference (on Jan 8)," she added.
Sasha Lyna said she also provided the police with evidence of the alleged conspiracy and the names of the individuals believed to be involved, which included lawyers.
However, she declined to reveal their names to the media.
Yesterday, Latheefa said that a criminal conspiracy has been set in motion against her following the disclosure of the recordings.
Met at another event later, Latheefa said the police report was not about the image but a plot to soil her reputation.
However, the MACC chief declined to divulge details on how she discovered the existence of the alleged conspiracy.
"It is not about a photo, it is information of a plot to tarnish my reputation. The issue is not about a photo per se. It is a serious plot.
"The information, we have given to the police," she said.
Latheefa reiterated that the alleged plot would not discourage or intimidate her and vowed to continue exercising her duties.
Meanwhile, Latheefa said she had yet to receive formal notice of Najib’s intention to cite her and MACC for contempt of court over the release of the recordings.
"I will wait for the papers," she said when asked.
Said to have taken place between January and July 2016, Najib was heard in one clip asking a United Arab Emirates prince for help to shield his stepson Riza Aziz from the US Department of Justice's scrutiny of 1MDB.
In another clip, former MACC chief Dzulkifli Ahmad is heard discussing the 1MDB investigation with Najib, his wife Rosmah Mansor and former Tabung Haji chairperson Abdul Azeez Rahim. This was when Dzulkifli was still a deputy public prosecutor.
The third revelation was from a conversation between Najib and Rosmah, where the latter is heard raising her voice while doling out advice to her husband on the 1MDB issue.
