(AFP) The United States embassy said it was not aware of "any specific threats targeting Americans" here.

The embassy said it issued the statement following US media reports that Malaysia was a country where Americans could be targeted in connection with global efforts to counter terrorism.

But the embassy still urged all Americans to take any measures they deem necessary to ensure their personal safety.

"The US government remains concerned about the security of Americans overseas," it said.

Washington last month said that it does not consider Malaysia as a country that harbours terrorists.

It said reports that Malaysia had been asked by the US to turn over citizens involved in terrorist activities or that Malaysia was being branded as a country that harboured terrorists were "false".

The embassy also said that the United States had not made any specific requests to the Malaysian government to extradite terrorists.
