Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has been bestowed with powers as state regent on behalf of his father Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar.
The official appointment ceremony was held at Istana Pasir Pelangi in Johor Bahru this morning, Tunku Ismail said on Twitter.
"The regent of Johor was entrusted by the sultan of Johor to carry out duties, administer the state of Johor, and has all powers provided to a sultan, which can be exercised at any time," he said.
No explanation was given for Tunku Ismail's appointment as regent. A regent is usually appointed to fill in for a sick or absent monarch.
A source close to the Johor palace told Malaysiakini that Sultan Ibrahim is in good health, but is expected to take a trip overseas sometime later this month.
The source also said Tunku Ismail's appointment could be a way to train the crown prince to eventually ascend the throne.
"Under Johor's state laws, a regent has exactly the same powers as the sultan.
"The excos will have to meet him, the menteri besar will meet with him," said the source, adding it was also interesting to note that no time frame was given for Tunku Ismail's appointment.
