'Very good' cooperation from MPs on asset declaration - Latheefa

MACC chief commissioner Latheefa Koya has commended the majority of MPs for declaring their assets, and said that the agency is now collecting information on their liabilities.
"As far as Parliament is concerned, we are getting very good cooperation in terms of the type of declaration that they (the MPs) put in.
"We also need to understand, it's not just asset declaration per se, but also their liabilities. We are in the midst of collecting that," she told the media in Putrajaya.
Latheefa explained that both asset and liability declarations will be put up on the MACC website, although certain details would be withheld to protect the MPs and their privacy.
She said there were MPs who had not declared their assets because they claimed that they had not received the right form.
"Some of them actually went to the Human Resources Management Information System (HRMIS)... so there's a mix-up in term of procedures," she added.
Early last month, the Dewan Rakyat approved a special motion for all MPs, senators and their immediate family members to declare their assets.
They have to declare their assets within a three-month period from the day the motion was approved (July 1).
Former Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak (above) is among the MPs who expressed unhappiness over the move.
The Pekan MP argued it was unfair for opposition lawmakers to declare all of their assets, part of which was not derived from their parliamentary allowance.
While PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang called the asset declaration a "communist and socialist concept that may have been dreamt up by DAP."
His deputy, Tuan Ibrahim was also against the move, saying that it went against Islam which discouraged the act of displaying wealth.
