Negotiations are underway for Malaysia's top sprint cyclists to be based in Melbourne.

Assistant Malaysian team coach John Beasley, who also trains world-class Australian cyclists Katie Mactier and Mark French, said today he hoped to know sometime next week if the move would be successful.

"We could potentially see the sprinters based in Melbourne and the endurance riders based in Perth," Beasley said.

Both he and head coach Lyn Nixon, also an Australian, are delighted with the progress the Malaysians have shown while competing in the Commonwealth Games.

The team continued their outstanding form today when Hafiz Sufian and Rizal Tisin both recorded personal-best times during qualifying for the men's sprint while their top rider Josiah Ng, who is already being coached privately by Beasley, reached the quarter-finals due to be run later in the day.

In the men's 4000m team's pursuit, Malaysia qualified for the bronze medal race against New Zealand, also scheduled to be run later today.

The team has already broken two national records in endurance events with Muhammad Ahmad Lufti and Amirrudin Jamaludin setting new marks in the 4000m individual pursuit.

Lufti clocked 4min 46.271sec while Jamaludin finished on 4min 49.106sec, both bettering Jamaludin's existing record of 4min 51.763sec set in the Sydney round of the World Cup at the start of the month.

One kilometre time-trial exponent Hafiz Sufian also set a new national record when he finished seventh in a time of 1min 06.011sec against a world-class field.
