PKR president Anwar Ibrahim said he was shocked that one of his aides has been arrested by the police in connection with the sex video allegedly implicating Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali.

He told reporters at the Parliament lobby today that he had no details about the arrest and said the matter was best left to the police.

Separately, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he was unaware of the arrest.

"I don't know, this is the first time I'm hearing (about it)," he told reporters after the launch of the inaugural Beyond Paradigm Summit 2019 at Mitec, Kuala Lumpur.

Anwar’s aide was among three individuals arrested in Johor Bahru yesterday in connection with the sex videos.

Malaysiakini is withholding the name of the aide, pending criminal charges, if any.

Their arrests came just a day after former Santubong PKR Youth leader Haziq Abdullah Abdul Aziz and five others were remanded to facilitate investigations into the sex videos.

The High Court in Kuala Lumpur today upheld a six-day remand order for Haziq, although the order was reduced to four days for the others who had been arrested with him.

Haziq had previously confessed that he was one of the men in the videos that began circulating last month, and claimed that the other person with him was Azmin.

Azmin has vehemently denied the allegation, describing it as character assassination intended to destroy his political career.

Mahathir had also said several times that it was unnecessary for Azmin to go on leave pending investigations into the sex videos.

In a separate statement, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution called for the authorities to be given space to carry out a fair and just investigation with regards to the three individuals arrested, including Anwar’s aide.

He said PKR will not intervene in the investigation and the party will take the appropriate action according to its constitution on any members found to be involved in the wrongdoings mentioned.
