"PAS does not exploit religion. The hadith provides guidance. If we do not use the hadith as our guide, then what?
"We are not exploiting the hadith, but what is important is that we act according to the hadith. We can't possibly dispute what the Prophet (Muhammad) said and we should follow."
Yesterday, when debating the government's motion in the Dewan Rakyat on a proposed motion to compel all MPs to declare their assets, Tuan Ibrahim said this was against the Prophet's teachings (hadith Nabi).
"Involving one's wife and children, if we look at Islam, the Prophet teaches (hadith Nabi) that when God gives you possessions, do not declare it to the public as others will be envious.
"The question of the safety of the assets and individuals when we declare (the assets) must be taken into account," he had said.
The motion was ultimately approved through a voice vote, with the opposition staying silent during the vote.
Tuan Ibrahim, who is also Kubang Kerian MP, had come under criticism following his statement.
PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution pointed out that in 2015, Tuan Ibrahim had demanded then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor declare their assets.
Tuan Ibrahim stressed that he had checked the hadith on the matter.
"I have checked the hadith. Even though there are other religious scholars having differing views, we cannot subscribe to only a single view of all hadiths," he said.
However, Tuan Ibrahim pointed out that the party did not object to the motion, but was merely unhappy with the matter of how the motion was tabled in the Dewan Rakyat.
He stressed that PAS MPs were prepared to declare their assets "if it did not court jealousy".
