For more than a year now I have been wanting to write in to express my support for ex-information minister Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fazir. News of his resignation prompted me to write immediately.

Although I did not think much of him as a culture and tourism minister, I was very happy at his liberalising of RTM. After decades of ultra-conservative authoritarian administration, Abdul Kadir brought pleasant changes to RTM's kampung image.

Under him, RTM's policy saw an about turn from Tok Mat's (Mohamad Rahmat) oh-so-silly ceremony of cutting hairs of rock musician's days. Gone are the ridiculous bans, official or unofficial, of long-haired males, short-skirted Malay females, local ghost dramas, appearances by opposition politicians and so on.

Of course the Datuk Paduka's visions could not have materialised if it had not been for Pak Lah's open-mindedness. Hidup Pak Lah.
