Perlis police chief Noor Mushar Mohd said the source of the fire could have been from a petrol bomb.
However, Mohd Asri claimed the Fire and Rescue Department had told him there was no sabotage and that the fire had started internally.
The incident occurred in front of his home in Kangar this morning.
Noor Mushar said cops received a call from Mohd's Asri's residence at 6.05am.
"Police together with the Fire and Rescue Department went to his home and found a black Honda Accord with its front bonnet on fire.
"The fire was put out by the Fire and Rescue Department. There was severe damage to the front bonnet, engine and windshield on and front and back.
"Police does not rule out the possibility of sabotage based on the damage to the front and back windshield which was the result of being pelted with a bottle filled with petrol intended to start a fire," he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.
Noor Mushar said that police have leads on the matter and is investigating the matter. The car was for Mohd Asri's official use.
The case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code.
Section 435 concerns mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage.
If found guilty, a person may be jailed for up to 14 years and shall be liable to a fine.
Meanwhile, Mohd Asri said the Fire and Rescue Department had informed him that they did not find any elements of sabotage.
"According to them, it is a possibility that the fire started from the engine near the battery. No external factor was discovered.
"Whatever it is, let us wait for the official full report from the investigation of the police of forensic of the Fire and Rescue Department," he said in a Facebook post.
