Two moderate earthquakes, one measuring 5.8 and the other 5.4 on the Richter scale were reported to have occurred off the islands of Andaman in the Indian Ocean and Borneo today.

The first happened at about 1,030km from Langkawi at 12.07pm while the second 1,576km South-South East (SSE) of Tawau at 1.11 pm.

According to a statement issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Services to Bernama, the first occurred at 12.9 degrees north and 93.1 degrees east of Andaman Island and the latter at 9.2 degrees south and 122.0 degrees east of Tawau.

The statement said that based on their locations and magnitudes, the earthquakes were not expected to generate tsunamis that could affect the coasts of Malaysia.
